Arrive early to see “The Cottage” at the Company Theater in Norwell to take in Ryan Barrow’s wonderful set design, showcasing a comfortable English weekend retreat used by the Van Kipness brothers and their varied guests, and owned by their mother. You will notice many interesting features, including a window nook, kitchen and large staircase, that will come in to play over the course of two acts (about two hours) including intermission.
“The Cottage” is a not so old comedy that feels vintage. It was written by Sandy Rustin in 2013 and first appeared on Broadway in 2023. It’s set in 1923 and features a group of adults who are not quite sure about themselves or their relationships. Sylvia (Emilee Leahy) is married to Clark (Timothy Pick) and Marjorie (Elizabeth Nelson-Childs) is married to Clark’s brother Beau (Joe Rich). A later visitor Dierdre (Jaqueline Hausman) was married to Richard (Rob Gullicksen). A dog (John Stamos) and a gardner (an uncredited Danny Bolton we think) make some cute cameo appearances.
We don’t want to spoil the plot, but the play, especially the first act, moves pretty fast and all of the actors are up to the task with line delivery, movement and timing. Let’s give credit to them and director Michael Hammond for their professionally madcap performances. They are all sharp as knives.
Leahy garners the most attention, followed closely by Rich, and they deserve it. Leahy draws you in with every look and gesture, setting the tone early that this is mostly her character’s journey, while Rich is so relatable as a guy who doesn’t always do good, but hopes and is trying to make it through somehow on his own terms.
No matter what happens, it’s all quite polite and nothing is done without some tea, a drink or a cigarette. The situations and dialogue are outrageous. There are many madcap moments including one surprise involving a large dismounted salefish that will keep you laughing and guessing how this multi-relationship mess will get resolved. It’s all quite entertaining, but maybe a gag or two too long. But we think you will get through it and be glad you did.
“The Cottage” continues through Sunday, October 26 at the Company Theater, 30 Accord Park Drive, Norwell, MA. There are evening and matinée performances available. Standard admission tickets are $38.
